Roots, Shoots & Tips

Our main educational program of 2016 ‘Shohin’ with Mark Arpag – a full day dedicated to smaller-sized bonsai with a goal of full-club participation in a future display of our members’ trees. Carl Hoffner challenged Mohawk Valley Bonsai Club to get everyone to start creating one or more shohin and over time develop and style them so that we can incorporate them into a group display for both our own club show and eventually for a larger regional or national exhibit. He also recommended that we select Mark Arpag as this year’s guest speaker to help kick-off the process with an in depth program that would both provide instruction, demonstration, and a hands on workshop to introduce our members to proper selection of material, healthy growth, styling and display of shohin bonsai.

SATURDAY JUNE 11 – at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Utica, 10 Higby Road, just off Genesee Street.

Lecture/demonstration from 9 a.m.–noon. This is free and open to the public. We extend an invitation to our neighboring bonsai clubs to attend. We ask ALL who plan to attend are asked to please RSVP here, or by calling us at 315/204-4016, for seating-planning purposes.

The club will purchase a tree (provided by Mark) to be used in the demonstration and it will later be raffled. The demo will be followed by a BYO Lunch Break.

The shohin workshop is scheduled from 12:30–4:30 p.m. It is limited to 10 participants — who must be pre-registered. The cost is $25 payable that day.

In April we took a sign-up list and we have 8 people so far. The current list indicates that these members will participate in Mark’s workshop: Art, Tom, Cathy, Nancy, Bill, George, Jo, and Fran. If any of these folks cannot commit to attending please let us know ASAP so that others can. Currently 2 openings remain and we want to fill them, possibly by opening the invitation to non-members.

We will need to clean up and allow for another group activity by 5 p.m. We’ll then take Mark to dinner at the Asian Bistro at the side entrance to the New Hartford Shopping Center. All are welcome to join us there.
