Roots, Shoots & Tips

Our next monthly meeting is Saturday, March 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church (UUC), 10 Higby Rd., Utica.

Blended Trident Maple Workshop - led by club member Carl Hoffner

Learn to create a shohin bonsai by blending young seedlings together. With this method one can create a mame or shohin bonsai in a fraction of the time it usually takes. The advantages of the blended process are that it creates a thick trunk quickly, allows for exact placement of branches, uses inexpensive material, can create a perfect nebari and allows you to be more creative.
Prior to the meeting, it would be helpful if members reviewed images of shohin trident maple bonsai on the internet for inspiration, such as this example at Bonsai Empire >>.
The Club will supply the following:
  1. 10 trident maple seedlings per member. Extras may be available at $1.00 each
  2. A plastic training pot and screens.
  3. Bonsai soil. (bring your own screened blend if you have it, about 1 1/2 quarts. Regular bonsai soil is okay or a 1-to-1 blend of regular and shohin soil)
  4. Wire to bend tree. (green floral tape or raffia can be used if you have it.)
  5. Spray water bottle to keep roots moist.
  6. Some bonsai tools will be available to share.
You should bring:
  1. Sizable pan or tub to work in.
  2. Bonsai tools if you have them. (bonsai wire cutters and scissors)
  3. A turntable

Our officers for the 2018 season are:

February’s meeting theme was SILHOUETTE TREES. Members displayed silhouette deciduous trees and shared their back stories. This exercise primed us for upcoming showings (eg. Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute et al) while also serving to enlighten each other on styling, potting, care, and more.
