Roots, Shoots & Tips

Saturday, October 8, 1 p.m. at D’ALESSANDRO’S LANDSCAPING NURSERY

1346 Higby Road, (Frankfort, NY), just east of Albany St. (aka Albany Road) and about 5 miles from the U-U Church of Utica.

Mohawk Valley Bonsai Club will conduct a ‘Bonsai Search Party – Fall Crawl’. We can explore the nursery grounds for appropriate material for creating bonsai – hint, hint, look for some older low growing junipers, or look in the greenhouse for some small pre-bonsai ‘starters’. All are priced at $25-$45 each. Included in this group are dwarf mugo pines, Japanese white pines (including Catherine Elizabeth), Hinoki cypress, Chinese elms (including seiju and Jacqueline Hillier), Chinese juniper ‘shimpaku’, cotoneaster and more.

PLEASE NOTE – bring cash or check – no cards accepted.

There will also be a demonstration of initial styling by local artist Doug Whitfield. The demo tree (purchased by MVBC) will be raffled after the demonstration.

This event is free and open to the public. Call it a ‘crawl’ or a ‘search party’ and let’s have some fun!

Dress appropriately – there could be a little mud in some areas of the nursery grounds. While there enjoy the beautiful koi pond, the fountains and numerous seasonal gift and decorative items.

Feel  free to bring any trees from your collection to show. We will have a nice display area for show trees to inspire people and they can be in any stage of development.

September was devoted to bonsai shows and exhibitions and MVBC had no club meeting. We hope that many of you were able to visit the 5th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester, the Bonsai Club of Central New York annual show and sale in Liverpool, and the Mohawk Hudson Bonsai Society show in Saratoga Springs. Now we turn our attention to fall programs and soon we’ll be preparing for ‘over-wintering’ our trees. There will be more discussion of this soon.

No new transactions. Current account balance is $995.28.

Nov 12 – MVBC workshop with Bill Jones – shohin Chinese juniper ‘shimpaku’ in the windswept style. Cost is $20. More info in the November newsletter.
