Roots, Shoots & Tips

Our monthly meeting is Saturday, August 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church, 10 Higby Rd, Utica.

The program: Bring-Your-Own-Tree Workshop

Bring a tree or two for advice and/or some seasonally appropriate work. This may include planning for the future of your tree, perhaps some styling and wiring. Some trees will not be at a stage yet for certain aspects of development, but early fall is a good time for others. We will also be able to work in a round-table (or rectangular) discussion of preparation for colder-weather care and overwintering of your bonsai. Bring your tools! Club wire will be provided.

Last Month

Our August meeting featured a group-participation, hands-on session called Speed Bonsai by Doug Whitfield and Carl Hoffner. It was the conclusion of the series using two junipers that we acquired from D'Alessandro's Nursery last fall and worked on in the spring. We wrapped up with a talk by the 'team-leaders' about their individual project trees, their design plans for the future, general and immediate care instructions, and finally a repot into training containers.

In conclusion, the demo trees were raffled. Nancy Knapp won the juniper designed by Doug and new member Rick Short won Carl's. Both were encouraged to bring their new trees back to future club or study group sessions for additional advice and progress work as needed. Heavy emphasis was given on keeping them healthy (and alive) and how newly styled and repotted trees require very special care. We thank our two program leaders for all the wonderful work and instruction given to pull off this very interesting learning program, and we congratulate the winners!!

Bonsai Study Group

Our next study group will meet Sunday September 24, 1-3 p.m. at D'Alessandro's Nursery. This is located at 1346 Higby Road, up the long, beautiful hill just east of Albany Street, and about 10 minutes from our club meeting site. This will be a “bring-your-own-tree” workshop! It’s a great opportunity to get some personal help with styling and preparation for winter storage and to check out all of new items D'Alessandro's has to offer. They sell Bill Jones’ bonsai soil, and bonsai pots large and small, new and used, many styles.

Please confirm your plans to attend by emailing Tom or Deverie, or call 315/204-4016. There is no cost and nothing to bring. The nursery plans to promote also.
